Volcano Dreams retells the Mesopotamian Epic of Gilgamesh through a dream. On the third night of his six-day journey to the Cedar Forest, Gilgamesh dreams of a volcanic eruption: wind, dust, quakes, lightning, fire, and ash. In three drawings, DESIGN EARTH sets this vast and hostile dream against the small, fragile Dream House in which Gilgamesh sleeps, inside a circle on the floor. Gilgamesh slays Humbaba, guardian of the forest, and fells the cedars for temple doors, but the dream continues to haunt him: he hears the noise of an eruption and sees a damaged grain silo in Beirut, as blue grains of ammonium nitrate fall from the sky. Sap bleeds from the trees, bees swarm the hollow cedars, and Gilgamesh wanders the wild, afraid of death.
